DJ Kool Herc attends B.B. King Blues Club & Grill on October 20, 2010 in New York City. "[He] who we call the father of hip-hop, Kool Herc, is not doing well," DJ Premier announced on his Sirius XM radio program over the weekend.
"Since he's very sick and has no insurance ... [he] needs to pay his bills so he can get out of the hospital."
The nature of his illness has not been disclosed, but relatives are asking for help from his fans to raise money to pay for his care.

The Bronx man is a legend of early rap music, helping create key DJ techniques in the 1970s like the break beat that greatly influenced generations of performers in the decades that followed.
But since he never had any major hits, the 55-year-old born Clive Campbell, has struggled financially.
"We spoke today, and he needs some help to pay his bills for the hospital because he can't hold it down," DJ Premier said. "Being that he is the man who set this whole culture off, ya'll should be wanting to do it any type of way that you can."

Jamaican reggae artist, Major Mackerel, is recovering from injuries sustained after being slashed with a samurai sword. The 41-year-old, real name Garfield Dixon, was taken to the hospital after getting into an altercation with a Brooklyn man for making “inappropriate” comments at his wife. When police arrived on the scene they found37-year-old, Oscar Joseph holding a bloody two-foot long sword.
Joseph is being charged with assault with intent to cause a serious injury, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon. Mackerel was taken to the hospital with lacerations on his head, arm and hand.
Mackerel left the hospital with bandages around his head, wrist and elbow. When asked about the incident, he told theNew York Daily News not to worry saying,
“I don't feel bad, these things happen. It's a Jamaican thing.”
A Jamaican thing? My Friends don't act like this.
MARK CURRY SPEAKS ON NEW BOOK AND EXPOSES SECRETS ABOUT BAD BOY???
So a lot of people may have a puzzled expression on their face and are scratching their heads asking ‘Who the f*ck is Mark Curry?' and it's okay, it happens.
A brief history lesson, Mark Curry is an Atlanta-based rapper that was once under the Bad Boy imprint and worked to bring Puff Daddy to the point where he could be known as Diddy. Under the label since 1997, Curry departed ways, or disappeared like the rest of the roster, around 2005.
According to sources, including himself, Curry was responsible formany top-charting hits for Puff back in the day as his ghostwriter although he never had an album materialize for himself. Anyone that still needs a face to the name, the rapper was featured on the video “Bad Boy 4 Life.”
Among the list of disgruntled employees, Curry is no different as has spoke on his problems with Puff on many occasions. The talk even resulted in a book titled, Dancing With The Devil speaking on such subjects as how Diddy basically drained his artists of their funds by charging them for his feature on their albums, even if the appearance wasn't asked for.
In an interview with Gyant Unplugged, Curry took some time out to clear out the mess and speak on the actual relationship between Biggie and Diddy.
"Biggie was already on his way out the door," Curry said in an interview. "And I just remember the stories of when Biggie would want money from Puff -- and they would be doing a show and Biggie wouldn't show up to the show until ten minutes before the show and Puff would be like 'Where is he at, where is he at?' and that's where he would be his leverage. Like, Biggie knew that Puff needed him... If you break it down and look at the situation for what it truly is, Biggie Smalls made Bad Boy. Bad Boy is Biggie Smalls... A person like Mase that come to Puff and wants a record deal, automatically is willing to do anything he's gotta do to have that deal because he automatically -- he asked him for a record deal. So you gotta look at it like, you willing to sell your soul for this sh*t right here."
Such a strong statement raises many alarms and even more questions. What would Bad Boy have been if Biggie was still here today? What would have happened with his career because everyone knows how Puff does now after two releases from his artists now.
An even bigger question is why come out now? Sounds like a plea for attention since there was it's been four years since he left the label. Whatever the case, Diddy has a lot of skeletons in the closet and the bones seem to be falling out.
METHOD MAN ARRESTED
Already having his fair share of issues with the law, things have taken a turn for the worse for Wu Tang staple, Method Man. Meth was arrested today by New York police for tax evasion. According to WABC New York, the rapper owes the government over $30,000 in taxes. Meth, real name Clifford Smith, is reportedly in police custody waiting for arraignment. He's charged with failure to pay personal income tax and earnings and misdemeanor failure to pay taxes. He faces up to four years behind bars if convicted.
Earlier this year Meth made headlines after a woman accused of him shooting her with a pellet gun. That case is still pending.
He also faced tax issues in 2008 when his Lincoln Navigator was repossessed by the Department of Taxation.
